Chapters 1-3 (pgs. 1-18)
Novisha is such a sweet girl, and she is faithful to Tyrell. However, Tyrell doesn't seem to be as faithful. That enraged me because Novisha deserves to be treated with the same kind of treatment that she has towards Tyrell. If I was Tyrell, I would have gone up to Jasmine to introduce myself and make her feel welcome. But I wouldn't have lead her on to think that there could be something romantic. I would not have sat next to her on the bus and allowed her to cry on my shoulder. I think it was crazy that he tried to keep his relationship status a secret by turning the volume down on his phone. He literally just left Novisha's, punching the wall, because he was afraid that some other guy was trying to holler at his girl. I don't understand the double-standards!
I can get behind your feminist critique of the text. For later Reading Journal entries, i'd love to see more of how i could bring this text to the classroom. For this entry, it appears too far under your skill level of response, but I know that's only because the text's content level is much too low for you to properly add profound philosophical counters to it's high-school-drama plot line.
ReplyDeleteRegardless of your reaction to some of the book--did you like it? Do you think high schoolers will like it? I know some of us used it at DJJ, but I worry it's not challenging enough for some of our students.
